2019 was a special year for Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira. The Beast was unstoppable in Springbok colours helping the Bokke clinch their 3rd Rugby World Cup and inspiring millions of children addicted to that oval ball in his native Zimbabwe and Mzansi Africa the country that adopted him and gave him a chance to showcase his skills at the very peak of world rugby. The moment was also a bittersweet one as Tendai announced his retirement from international rugby saying he did not want to mess up an otherwise perfect ending to his international rugby career. He also took the time to announce he would be letting go of the Sharks colours the club that took him in as a little kid from Zimbabwe fresh from Eaglesvale High.
Speculation as to where he would end was rife and for the longest time Beast held his cards close to his chest. Now the secret is out and it turns out Tendai is headed to America that land of impeachments and face tatooed rappers with colorful braids.Rugby is not an American staple (American football which shares similarities with rugby is) so the decision might be a bit puzzling for many.Explaining his stance Tendai Mtawarira was very clear that 2020 was the year for him to give back to the game that gave him so much through nurturing future talent and helping the game grow in America. The father of two had this to say about his move to America
"One of the things that attracted me to Old Glory DC was the opportunity to work with various youths from different backgrounds and being an Ambassador for Washington Youth Rugby and Eagle Impact Rugby Academy will allow me to do that.
EIRA are the largest rugby Academy in the USA."
