Moving different is not an easy feat but one Wallace Chirimuko seems to have mastered that artform with ease. Its hard to count on two hands artists who have lasted the last decade churning out hits yearly, dropping solid projects and speaking to the nation's soul and on the various maladies facing society.Winky D has done just that exhibiting a proffesional outlook to his craft that is quite rare in a country that views music as nothing more than a hobby 'zvechirombe' in Zimbabwe's dominant Shona Language. With his 2019 release on the cards many a creative could learn a few lessons from the Gaffa.
Fan engagement is the key to any succesful movement and Winky D has not been found lacking in that department. He iniated a social media countdown for his album on both Twitter and Facebook and diehard fans have been following updates about the album on those platforms. He also dropped a single off the album thus giving people something to discuss about his upcoming album. That the song is metaphoric and has inuendo by the boatload fed the conversation and arguments about the quality of the song which in turn only fed the fires around talk of the album launch.Asking the fans to name the album was another masterstroke and that artwork with chains on his head led to the #NjemaChallenge so he is obviously winning in that regard.
Since the days of the Medicii family and other patrons of culture funding has played a pivotal role in the spread of art.In the space age corporate support has often helped artists execute their visions unrestrained by financial constraints.Winky partnered with Econet Wireless the organisation belonging to Zimbabwe's richest man and the partnership has proved fruitful.Sasai,Ecosure,Cassava Smart Tech are just a few of the Econet affilliates working with Wallace on his upcoming launch. That Winky D and Econet are both strong brands will surely prove beneficial to both parties as far as finances and brand placement is concerned.
Any epic piece of work will at some point require the press to augment its reach if it is to make an impact on consumers.Winky D has embarked on an aggressive press tour that has seen him touch radio stations, the internet and even traditional newspapers.Features in H-Metro,Herald as well as appearances on Zim Dancehall shows like Zi Judgement Yard not to mention the ever so popular Bus Stop TV have really helped raise awareness about the Njema album.
Last but not least the man has an actual event that might prove oversubscribed if initial projections are taken into consideration. The lineup is very balanced what with Mambo Dhuterere whose hits are everyone's daily bread plus Baba Harare an equally good hitmaker and Killer T a seasoned perfomer and Takura whose live perfomances have been to die for.We are not taking anything away from anyone when we say its time Zimbabwean artists did proper album rollouts in this manner instead of waking up on the wrong side of the bed and tagging every second cousin and radio dj to their new Soundcloud link.
